THE LITTLE GREEN LIZARD
WE RACK OUR BRAINS FOR REASONS.
WE WANT TO FIND A CAUSE.
WHY SQUANDER OUR LIVES
WITH "WHY" AFTER "WHY"?
WHY ARE WE HERE? BECAUSE.
The lights come up in the girl's house. The Girl is again seated at the vanity table, looking at herself in the mirror. She is humming to herself in delight. The Little Green Lizard hears her and turns to look.
THE LITTLE GREEN LIZARD
Well, at least somebody's happy.
THE GIRL
HE'LL PICK ME UP AT NINE
TO TAKE ME TO THE DANCE.
THE NIGHT WILL BE DIVINE,
THE MOONLIGHT PURE ROMANCE.
WE'LL ENTER AND MY GOWN
WILL SHIMMER ON THE AIR.
THE JEALOUS GIRLS WILL FROWN.
THE BOYS WILL STOP AND STARE.
THE LITTLE GREEN LIZARD
She knows what she wants, I'll give her that. What of the other half of our love interest? The student will become a professor of epistemology. His books will be so unreadable and his manner so rude that he will become known as one of the great minds of the age. He will live to ninety and never think of the nightingale again.
THE GOOD AND LOVING SUFFER.
THE CRUEL AND SELFISH THRIVE.
WHY TORTURE OURSELVES?
TO LIVE IS TO LIVE.
THAT'S ALL WE ARE: ALIVE.
THE GIRL
OH! WHAT A NIGHT
TONIGHT WILL BE!
OH! WHAT TONIGHT
WILL BRING TO ME!
A NIGHT FOR SIGHS
OF PURE DELIGHT,
A NIGHT OF ECSTASY!
WE'LL SWIRL AND THEN WE'LL SWAY
AND WHEN IT GROWS TOO HOT,
WE'LL STOP AND STEAL AWAY
TO FIND A QUIET SPOT.
WHEN NIGHT HAS RUN ITS COURSE--
THE BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE--
HE'LL ASK, HIS VOICE GONE HOARSE,
IF I WILL BE HIS WIFE.
THE LITTLE GREEN LIZARD
In case you're wondering, she will marry the chamberlain's son. They will grow fat and content and raise a houseful of unattractive, dull, and unremarkably happy children. I suppose there's a moral to this story. If there's one thing I've learned about humans it's that you love looking for meaning in the unlikeliest of places. Well, I'd like to stay but I have flies to catch. No happy endings for them, either. So you'll have to sort out the moral yourselves.
THE WORLD IS FULL OF QUESTIONS.
OUR ENDS ARE FRAUGHT WITH DOUBT.
WHY WORRY OURSELVES
TO DEATH ABOUT DEATH?
JUST WAIT: WE WILL FIND OUT.
The Little Green Lizard exits. The Girl swirls around the stage as though dancing with an imaginary partner. The lights go slowly down on her and the dead Nightingale.
